REDDING HQ - Long time UPEC Executive Board member Larry Olsen announced he will be retiring his position in Glenn County and his position on the Executive Board later this month.
Larry Olsen is an electrician for the County Glenn, California. He is retiring June 30, 2014. He is also a military veteran and served in Vietnam.
When Larry heard that UPEC Local 792 was organizing the Glenn County Employees Association (GCEA) he immediately responded to our organizing team. Larry was the driving force behind organizing the Glenn County employees in 2000. He has always had access to every building in the County and managed to talk to every employee about voting in LiUNA/UPEC to be their Union. He was a key factor in winning that election in October of 2000.
Larry immediately joined as a member and was immediately appointed to the Executive Board in December 2000. While on the Executive Board he stepped up as President for a period and serves as auditor. He became the Chief Steward for Glenn County in 2001. Larry has served as a negotiations team member and became a leader for several meetings and participated in our Steward Academy. Larry also assisted us in organizing a small bargaining unit in Butte County that has spread to now 3 bargaining units in Butte County over the years.
He has been a constant supporter of our local staff and Business Manager over the years seeing us grow from a small rural local to a busy proactive local representing over 60 collective bargaining agreements in 13 Northern California Counties. Larry is a member who understands the importance of union membership and being an active participant in his union.
Larry has been a dedicated UPEC member for 14 years while serving the citizens and employees of Glenn County. He is the second Board member to retire in just 6 months. Longtime Lassen County Executive Board member Keith Coker retired December 31, 2013. "We have enjoyed working with Larry for the past 14 years and will miss his smile, good sense of humor, tenacity and desire to contribute to working families in Northern California", said Business Manager Chris Darker.
Larry plans to continue his work with the Union and develop a UPEC Retiree program to keep retirees informed and active in protecting their benefits and those of active members. His last Executive Board meeting will be on Saturday, June 21, 2014.
