On August 15, 2014 the U. S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) posted a notice at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, hereafter referred to as the agency. The OSHA notice identified 16 Serious Violations of asbestos in a Capehart housing quarter at Fort Barker. The employees were doing some demolition to the inside of the housing unit and did not feel conditions were safe so they brought their concerns up to their Union Representative Ellis Miller. OSHA was contacted. An inspection by OSHA was performed April 23rd through June 23rd 2014. The United Public Employees of California Local 792 staff attorney, J. Ocean Mottley was in attendance for most of the inspections. The results of the OSHA inspection revealed that the agency, Golden Gate National Recreation Area did not do due enough to protect the employees from harms way. One OSHA violation was not having a competent asbestos qualified person on the construction site while removing floor tiles with 2% asbestos and mastic with 8% asbestos. The agency also did not supply any type of monitoring or a respiratory protection program for the employees doing the demo. The agency is actively working on remediation of the unsafe work environment. An informal conference has been scheduled by the agency with OSHA and the employees along with union representation. The informal conference will be held at the OSHA office located at 1301 Clay St, Suite 1080N, Oakland, CA 94612 on Tuesday September 2, 2014 at 10 a.m.
