The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments today in a case brought by Illinois state workers that challenges union payroll deductions from union non-members. The case was originally brought by Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner against AFSCME in an effort to end so-called "fair share" fees. But after a court found that Rauner lacked standing, two state workers intervened in the case to replace him. Last year, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois dismissed the case, citing the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals' decision in Friedrichs vs. California Teachers Association, which said that public unions are entitled to fair share fees.
