Butte County - The devastation of the Camp Fire reached deep into our membership ranks with 39 members losing their residences to the devastation. Members working in five separate bargaining units were affected - Glenn County General Unit, Butte County Skilled Trades Unit, Butte County Professional Unit, Butte College Peace Officers Association and the City of Chico Clerical, Professional and Technical Unit.
The Camp Fire devastation had been preceded by the Redding area Carr fire after which the UPEC Executive Board donated what we could from our already tight budget. When the Camp Fire hit, with even more members affected, we had no funds left to donate so we reached out to our International Union. LiUNA Southwest Region International Vice President Rocco Davis quickly responded with a $10,000 check that we have divided equally and are distributing. Thank you, Rocco! We always know you have our back!
Our employers were generally supportive of employees affected by the fire but of course, as in any emergency, oversights and errors will occur. UPEC Labor Representative Barbara Ramey worked diligently to assist our affected members including making sure time off was handled appropriately. For example, time off for 3 days of ordered shutdown at the County Solid Waste site needed to be restored to several employees. Another example where Barbara made progress was in getting Butte County approval to reimburse deductible amounts for personal vehicles parked in County parking lots where the vehicles were destroyed by the fire.
We wish all our affected members the best as they work through this unprecdented calamity.
